My name is Isaac M. Hagenbuch. I am currently a second year graduate student and I do my research in the Estuarine Ecology Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of South Carolina, Columbia. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Biology from Penn State in 2004.
My current research is focused on the role that benthic microalgae (BMA) play in estuarine ecosystems. Specifically, I am working to develop a spectroscopic method that coastal managers can use to quickly and inexpensively estimate BMA biomass, while simultaneously recording information about BMA spatiotemporal distribution. BMA are important primary producers in temperate estuarine ecosystems, contributing up to 60% of primary production. They can also exert control over erosion/sedimentation and the biogeochemical cycling of estuarine sediments. Currently little is known regarding the spatial distributions of this key microbial component and that is something that I hope to improve as part of my PhD work.
